The RHA has a very long history. A previous iteration existed from 1932-1935 with over 9000 members named the Associated Road Operators. Eventually, the association merged with the Commercial Motor Users’ Association in 1945 and formed what we know today as the Road Haulage Association.
In 1948, the RHA published RHD20, a rate schedule for its members, which was followed up in 1960 by the Black Book – The Long Distance Rates Guide. This was a publication with around 140000 recommended rates for hauliers. The passing of the Restrictive Trade Practices Act of 1974, however, meant that the RHA could no longer make recommendations to members on how rates should be increased to match costs, and the Black Book was discontinued.
These days the Road Haulage Association Ltd (RHA) is a not-for-profit trade association in the United Kingdom with its head office located in Peterborough. Other offices can be found in Weybridge, Livingston, Bristol and Bradford. The RHA is dedicated solely to road haulage and as a trade association is responsible for campaigning, advice, training, information and business services for its members (currently over 7,000) who between them operate over 100,000 commercial vehicles. RHA services also include audits, risk assessments and contracts of employment…. and not forgetting the online shop for all your product needs… so pretty much a one stop shop!
