What Is A Crane – Or Lifting – Supervisor?
A crane supervisor is responsible for the management and safety of everyone working on the site in and around the lift operation.
They need to direct and supervise lifting operations to ensure they are carried out in accordance with the method statement.
Consequently, they need to be competent and suitably trained (more on that later) with sufficient experience and authority to stop a lifting operation if it is judged too dangerous to proceed.
What Does A Crane Supervisor Do?
So, what sort of responsibilities can you expect if you work as a crane supervisor?
The construction industry is full of life-threatening tasks that must be inspected, examined and executed correctly. Crane supervisors have the crucial work of reviewing potentially unsafe lifting practices to ensure the safety of the people involved.
There are several duties associated with the role.
- These will include (but will not be limited to):
- Working with teams to ensure all lifting operations comply with the law
- Ensuring the health and safety of all employees and members of the public
- Examining and assessing varied cranes according to work and the conditions involved.
- Assigning relevant work to all crew members in accordance with the project and lifting plan
- Ensuring relevant work by others is carried out safely, and to completion
