It was a beautiful morning on the sunny South Coast today – a perfect day to offload 18 bales of straw, especially prepared for Chris Gaussen, Master Thatcher and his team of skilled workers.
A 400 year old cottage in Lancing, West Sussex has had the original straw removed from its roof and is being replaced over the next few months.
Sussex Transport was tasked with meeting the straw delivery this morning, which had been brought up from North Devon by J M Becklake and to lift the bales into the garden and onto the roof of the building.
The new thatch is expected to last another 400 years with only the top layer needing to be replaced after about 35.
Having done some research on this old cottage, we have sadly failed to find any history on line.
However we did come across some fascinating memories from a gentleman who posted on a ‘Lancing Memories’ blog spot – you can read all about his memories HERE which features many a memory of old Cokeham Lane and surrounding – where the cottage is located.
Sussex Transport were delighted to be able to help with this local job – and would be happy to discuss YOUR lifting requirements on 01903 751100
