Sussex Transport made a dedicated delivery of air conditioning units to McLaren in Woking on one of its fleet of HIAB vehicles last week.
Next month sees the start of the European season of the Grand Prix, as the teams and drivers head to Istanbul Park for the Turkish Grand Prix.
So how do the McLaren team and all the equipment get to where they need to be in time for the race?
The answer is 22 large Vodafone McLaren Mercedes trucks!
All are 16m long, 2.5m wide and 4m tall, and can haul loads of up to 40 tons. They’re powered by diesel Mercedes-Benz V6 engines, which are turbocharged and inter-cooled. Their fuel tanks can hold 400 litres of fuel at maximum capacity, giving them a range of 1100-1200km. Top speed is 90km/h.
The journey from the UK to Istanbul Park involves a 1733km trip to the port of Trieste, which is on Italy’s Adriatic coast. The journey takes about 26 hours. Then it’s a 2 day ferry crossing and finally a 30 minute drive to Istanbul Park.
