Last Friday we were asked to transport a selection of goods stored in our warehouse to a client in Llanelli using one of our Sprinter vans.
Back in 2003, Llanelli hit the headlines when some supermarkets noticed an increase in the sale of its cheap cooking oil. Assuming the customers were simply doing a lot of frying and making the most of the 42p a litre bargain, they thought nothing of it.
It wasn’t until the Department of Transport began a series of trial tests that the supermarket staff realised something odd had been going on!
In an attempt to take diesel vehicles emitting illegal emissions off the road, inspectors introduced spot checks on roads in Bristol, Westminster, Glasgow, Canterbury and Wales. It was in Wales that they found a car with a fuel tank half full of cooking oil!
At nearly half the cost of diesel at that time, the driver simply mixed his tank with cooking oil and standard fuel – and amazingly it worked. No modifications were needed and the best bit was that instead of diesel fumes, the engine gave off the alluring aroma of frying time at the local chippy!
It seems the driver who was spot-checked was not the only one to be doing this, judging by the 20% increase in cooking oil sales at one supermarket alone!
However … unless you pay duty on the cooking oil fuel, this method is illegal!
