So what is NOx?
Nitrogen is released during fuel combustion and it combines with oxygen to create nitric oxide (NO) and then nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide are referred to together as oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
These NOx gases react and form acid rain, smog and ground level ozone. Nothing good really!
In 2011 the European Union emission inventory report 1990–2011 under the UNECE Convention on Long-range Trans-boundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) labelled Road Transport as the single largest contributor of NOx to the environment. This included cars of course.
It is great to hear that NOx from trucks will have fallen by over 80 per cent against 2013 levels by 2025. But this is no time to stand on ceremony. Continuous improvement and fleet development is crucial to ongoing success and we plan to keep improving our fleet and our environmental / sustainability credentials.
