Big enough to cope, small enough to care, Sussex Transport have a varied fleet of vehicles and a team of experienced, fully uniformed drivers.
Last week we made a delivery of air conditioning units to Portsmouth in Hampshire on one of our HIAB trucks.
Portsmouth harbour is an extremely busy port – from the pubs and restaurants scattered along its harbour you can seen Nelsons flagship ”The Victory”, many naval warships, the ‘Spinnaker Tower” and one of the busiest (and most expensive) waterways in the country!
Set just a mile offshore are a few victorian forts, rising from the sea – These date back to the late 1800s, when Lord Palmerston, then Prime Minister, hastily commissioned the construction of five sea forts to protect Portsmouth harbour from French invasion following news that Napoleon III had become Emperor of France. The attack never came, and the forts become known locally as Palmerston’s follies, sitting redundant ever since.
One of these constructions – known as Spitbank Fort has recently been given a huge makeover and opened in April this year as an exclusive-use hotel, sleeping 18 people.
While the sea-worn granite exterior may not be to everyone’s tastes, the interior is more aesthetically pleasing and has been transformed from a dingy naval defence base to a glamorous space.
The original distressed-brick walls and riveted ceilings have been retained, and the nine bedrooms have been decked out with cowhide rugs, modern furniture and chandeliers. Meals are served in any one of three dining rooms; there is also a Laurent-Perrier Champagne bar, a wine cellar and a rooftop pool.
The journey begins at Spitbank’s own departure lounge in the Royal Clarence Marina, where guests are served Champagne and canapés before their private boat transfer.
You are free to make as much noise as you wish – after all, there are no neighbours to disturb!
Thinking of treating yourself? exclusive use of Spitbank hotel for 7 nights, full board is a mere £56,000 !
