Ronnie Biggs was held at Belmarsh for his part in the Great Train Robbery of 1963. After holding up a mail train on its journey from Glasgowto London, the gang stole £2.6 million – the equivalent of around £40 million in today’s terms. Biggs was released from prison in August 2009 on compassionate grounds following serious illness, aged 80.
Back in 1988 the film ‘Buster’ was a successful comedy-drama about of the life of Buster Edwards – another of Biggs’s accomplices in the Great Train Robbery and featured Phil Collins as the leading man with Julie Walters as his wife as well as famous names such as Larry Lamb, Sheila Hancock and Chris Ellison in the cast.
On 17 November 2011, Ronnie Biggs will release his new and updated autobiography, “Odd Man Out: The Last Straw” at Shoreditch House in London.
Sussex Transport are proud of their association with HMP Prison Service and always ensure the drivers understand the need for additional security and necessary checks before being assigned to these jobs.
