A sculpture of a grimly determined walking man by Alberto Giacometti broke records by becoming the most expensive work of art ever sold at auction when it was bought for £65m. The price, achieved at Sotheby’s in
London, was five times more than its estimate of £12m-18m. However this record was broken recently when Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’, painted in 1895 fetched a record £74 million at auction!
A collection of jewels owned by the late Dame Elizabeth Taylor fetched £74.9m at a New York auction. The highlight was a necklace featuring a 16th Century pearl which sold for £7.6m, a record for the gem. The
actress’ famous 33.19-carat diamond ring, given to her by Richard Burton, also sold for £5.7m.
A bracelet owned by Wallis Simpson, whose affair with Edward VIII led to his abdication, sold for a world record-breaking £4.5m at auction. The Cartier-designed diamond panther bracelet was sold by Sotheby’s. It was the
most expensive bracelet and most expensive Cartier item to be sold at any auction.
A Chinese vase from the early Ming period has been sold for £14m – a world record at auction for any item of Ming porcelain. The vase, owned by Swiss tycoons, was bought at Sotheby’s Hong Kong by an anonymous telephone bidder. The blue and white Meiping vase of fruit sprays is estimated to be at least 500 years old.
