The Goodwood Revival is a three-day festival that has been held every September at Goodwood Circuit since 1998 for the types of road racing cars and motorcycles that would have competed during the circuit’s original period of 1948 to 1966. The first revival took place 50 years after the 9th Duke of Richmond and Gordon opened the motor racing track in 1948, driving around the circuit in a Bristol 400, then Britain’s state-of-the-art sporting saloon.
This event is one of the worlds most popular motor race meetings and the only United Kingdom event which recreates the 1950s and 1960s era of motorsport. Grand Prix cars are included, sports and GT cars as well as historic saloon cars and little seen Formula Juniors… Most importantly the historic racing cars have always been driven by famous names from motorsport past and present – some famous names include… Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Sir Jack Brabham, David Coulthard, Damon Hill, Martin Brundle and Barry Sheene, as well as celebrities such as Chris Rea and Rowan Atkinson.
Apart from the inclusion of a chicane on the start/finish straight the restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday, no modern vehicles are allowed within the circuit perimeter throughout the weekend except for modern race fire and rescue vehicles, there are also theatrical sets that bring the past back to life and those attending like to get into character by dressing up in period clothes… making it an event like no other.
In all this excitement of an era gone by you would be forgiven for not realising that modern vehicles do play a very large part in the setting up and breaking down of the event, after all the festival couldn’t go ahead without the need for transport vehicles delivering in the necessities such as the sets, stalls and stock as well as the basics like toilet blocks and not forgetting the most important commodity of all – the actual racing cars!!
