The M25 is the motorway encircling almost all of Greater London, to the East of London the two ends of the motorway are joined to complete the loop by the non-motorway A282 Dartford Crossing of the River Thames between Thurrock and Dartford. The M25 is one of the most important roads in Britain and is certainly one of the busiest, it was officially opened on October 29, 1986 at the section between Jct 22 and Jct 23 (London Colney and South Mimms) with a ceremony by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and at the time boasted to be the longest ring road or orbital road in Europe measuring in at 117 miles (188km) long.
The M25 passes through five counties… Kent, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, the policing of the road is carried out by an integrated group made up of the
Metropolitan, Thames Valley, Essex, Kent, Hertfordshire and Surrey forces.
